Even Breathing Can Feel Like Work
When life gets heavy, even breathing can feel like work. You start noticing cats emotions more than your own… because curling up with a purring friend is the only thing that quiets the noise for a minute. You wonder, Is there a link between mental health and cats? Or is it just me?
Ryan Has Brain Cancer… 🥺
For me, this is tender. When Ryan (who’s like a son to me) was diagnosed with brain cancer in August 2021 (read Ryan’s story here)… the weight was crushing.
That same month, a tiny kitten found us. (Sasha) She became my emotional support kitty… my baby angel. She’d climb onto my lap, rumble like a tiny engine, and somehow the jagged edges in my chest would soften.
And now there’s Charlie… my daughter rescued this little fur baby a couple of days ago. He hops into my lap, puddles into sleep, and purrs like he’s trying to knit my heart back together.
On days when chemo knocks Ryan down and I feel like a stressed cat myself, Charlie reminds me to breathe.
I’ve learned to read cat expressions… how a confused cat tilts his head, how a mad cat flares his tail, how an angry cat mood passes if you give space and gentleness. Turns out, noticing them helps me notice me.
That’s the real cat love: a quiet, stabilizing presence that meets you where you are. You’ve probably guessed, I’m a cat person.
(And yes, sometimes scrolling silly cats pictures, funny looking cats, cute kittens, and cute cats photos gives me a 60-second lift when the day feels impossible.)
Me, getting Sasha cuddles… 💜

Is There a Link Between Mental Health and Cats?
So… is there a link between mental health and cats? In plain words: many people find that living with a cat eases loneliness, grounds anxiety, and builds a gentle rhythm into hard days. Cats don’t “fix” grief or trauma, but they do offer steady companionship, sensory comfort (purrs and soft fur), and simple routines (feed, play, rest) that help our nervous systems settle.
Here are practical, grace-filled ways to let your cat support your heart:
1) Make a two-minute ritual
Every time your cat climbs into your lap, put your hand on your heart and breathe with the purr: Inhale 4, exhale 6, for one minute. Whisper a breath prayer: “Jesus, You are near… I am not alone.”
2) Name the feeling out loud
As you notice cats emotions, name your own: “I feel overwhelmed and tired.” Naming reduces intensity. Let the purr be your metronome while you speak truth gently.
3) Touch + texture for grounding
Pet slowly from head to tail… 10 strokes, unhurried. Notice warmth, weight, and texture. Let your mind rest on simple details; this is mindful presence in motion.
4) Play therapy (for both of you)
A 3-minute feather wand session breaks rumination loops. Movement tells your body, “I’m safe now.” Keep a toy where your anxious thoughts usually kick in.
5) Routine that loves you back
Morning: water, food, 60 seconds of purr time. Evening: tidy litter, one sentence in your journal, a quieter house. Tiny anchors help untangle chaotic days.
Gentle note: Cats support mental health, but they aren’t a replacement for professional care. If you’re in crisis, please reach out to a trusted person or local help line right away. You’re not a burden… ever.

Quick FAQ (in real words)
Do cats help with anxiety? Many people feel calmer with a cat nearby… touch, purring, and routine can lower the “mental static.”
What if my cat is having an angry cat mood? Give space, watch cat expressions (ears/tail), and soothe later. Boundaries help both of you.
Can scrolling cat content help? A minute of silly cats pictures or funny looking cats can give your brain a quick break. Then return to embodied calm with your own kitty.
Gentle Resources That Help Me
One Minute Pause app… A simple way to invite God into the moment when your chest is tight.
The Brilliant App… Scripture-soaked encouragement that keeps truth close when emotions spike.
Experience Jesus. Really. … A book that’s been healing for me; it helped me encounter Jesus in the middle of real life.
Consider adopting or fostering… If you’re able, local shelters are full of Sashas and Charlies who’d love a lap (and will love you right back). 💜
Final Thoughts
If you’re carrying more than feels possible, I see you.
A small, warm life sleeping on your lap isn’t the whole answer… but it’s a real mercy. Let your cat remind you to slow down, drink water, open a window, and tell the truth about how you feel.
Let Jesus remind you that you’re held, even now.
Is there a link between mental health and cats? In my home, the answer shows up every time a tiny heartbeat curls into my lap and purrs, “Stay. Breathe. You’re not alone.”
P.S. Many of you have asked how to help with Ryan. The most practical way is here: Ryan’s GoFundMe. If you can’t give, a share and a prayer are gifts we treasure. 💜
Until next time…
All my love,
SusieQ
