God, I Need You…
If you’ve ever whispered, “God I need You… is this God talking to me or just my own thoughts?”… you’re not alone. I grew up “around” church (hello, Easter Sundays), gave my life to Christ at 20, and still spent years feeling like a baby Christian who couldn’t quite hear. I’d pray, “God please help me,” and wonder: How do you know when God is talking to you?

I kept it quiet because… church people are supposed to have it together, right? But I didn’t. I never told my husband, my children… anyone. I just talked to God about it. It felt like a one-way conversation, and I was ashamed to admit it.
So I listened to leaders… even when some advice was off… because I didn’t trust my ability to hear Him. As a kid, adults told me I didn’t understand Scripture. That message dug deep. For a long time, I carried the ache of “I’m probably doing this wrong.”
Maybe you’ve felt that too… too noisy inside to notice God’s voice, too unsure to ask for help. It’s a lot. We live in a world at war; confusion is the enemy’s favorite tool.
Some nights I sat at the kitchen table with a hot mug of tea, heart racing, thinking, Only God knows how to lead me through this. The house was quiet, but my mind was loud.
Still… God is watching over you and me. He sees. He cares. He’s the God who sees me.
Shine a Spotlight So I Won’t Miss It…
(God Talking to Me)
So I started praying, “Lord, if this is You, shine a spotlight so I won’t miss it.” And in a few big moments, He did.
- When it was time for school decisions, I knew He was leading me to homeschool… wild, because I didn’t want to be “that” weird homeschooling family. Yet there it was: clarity with peace.
- In 2008, long before I understood what blogging was, I felt Him nudge me: start a blog. Again, that holy nudge. Looking back, I can say, “I know that was You God.”
Today I’m closer to Jesus than I’ve ever been… daily in the Word, talking with Him about everything. The old voices are quieter. God has been so good to me. And I want the same peace for you.
A quick note: Experience Jesus. Really. has been huge for me… it helped me connect with Jesus in a fresh, biblical way. I can’t recommend it enough.
How Do You Know When God is Talking To You
Here are gentle, biblical filters I use to discern His voice:
1) Test it With Scripture (truth first)
God won’t contradict His Word. If a “nudge” pushes me toward love, humility, repentance, courage, or obedience, that aligns with His heart. If it breeds pride, panic, or compromise, hard pass. When doubt hits, I remember: God loves me… and He leads in love.
2) Notice Peace and Conviction (not panic or shame)
The Holy Spirit brings a settled peace or a clear conviction… not frantic fear or shaming. Fear shoves; God shepherds. Some days all I can say is, “Lord, God knows I tried.” He meets me there with mercy.
3) Watch for Holy Echoes (repetition & timing)
A verse shows up three times, a sermon line lands, a friend texts at the perfect moment. These confirmations help me say, “I Know That Was You God.”
4) Invite Wise, Godly Counsel
Share what you’re sensing with mature believers who love Jesus and love you. God often speaks through the body of Christ. (By the way: I talk to God about you…the ones who read here and feel alone in this.)
5) Give it Time; Look for Fruit
You don’t have to force doors open. Over time, the right path produces the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience…). God is always with me… and with you… so you can walk, not sprint.
6) Ask Clearly (Yes, ask for a spotlight)
It’s okay to pray specific: “Jesus, if this is You, confirm it in Your Word and with Your peace.” He’s a good Father. God has been so good to me in this exact way.
A Simple Prayer to Pray
“Jesus, You are the God who sees me. If this is You, line it up with Scripture, surround it with peace, confirm it through wise counsel, and produce good fruit. If it’s not You, close the door. God I need You. Lead me, because God is watching over you and me. Amen.”
Journal Prompts (when you’re unsure)
- What does Scripture say about this decision?
- Where do I sense peace vs. pressure?
- What would obedience look like in the next 24 hours?
- What fruit (love, joy, peace) might grow if I say yes?
- Who can I ask to pray with me this week?
Sometimes the most powerful prayer is simple: “God please help me.” And when you’re tired, whisper this over your own heart: “God is always with me.”
On the hardest days, I’ve also prayed, “Lord, only God knows how to sort this out. Please lead me.” He has.

If you’re longing to hear Him more clearly, these have helped me slow down, quiet the noise, and stay rooted in truth:

Final Thoughts
You don’t have to be perfect to hear God. You just have to be His… and you are.
Keep opening your Bible.
Keep bringing your honest heart.
Keep asking for peace and watching for fruit.
One step, one whisper, one confirmation at a time, He’ll lead you. God is watching over you. And on the days you feel small, say it out loud: “God loves me.” He’s not playing hide-and-seek with your life.
Until next time…
