Constantly Connected…

We live in a world where we’re constantly connected… but more anxious, depressed, and overwhelmed than ever before.

If you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram, feeling like your life doesn’t measure up…

If you’ve found yourself addicted to checking likes, comparing your every day to someone else’s highlight reel…

You’re not alone.

More and more people are asking: Does social media affect mental health?

And the honest answer?
Yes.
It does.
Especially if we’re not mindful about how we use it.

A World Full of Filters, Selfies, and Viral Content

Social media was supposed to connect us. But often, it leaves us feeling isolated, inadequate, and not enough. It’s like we’re chasing a moving target of perfection… and never catching up.

I didn’t grow up in a world full of filters, selfies, and viral content.
I grew up before smartphones, before apps, before anyone could record you doing something embarrassing and upload it for the world to see. Thank God.

But even back then, I struggled with comparison, depression, and anxiety. I still looked at my classmates and thought, “Why does their life seem so perfect?” I didn’t know their real story… I just saw the version they showed at school.

Fast forward to today, and that pressure has exploded. Now, you don’t just see the polished version of people at school or work… you see it 24/7 on your phone. On Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and more. Everyone is showing off their vacations, their perfect kids, their beautiful homes, and their filtered skin. (Because seriously… who doesn’t have filters for pictures on their phone now?)

Behind the Scenes…

But behind the scenes? Many of those same people are silently struggling.

In the race for views and likes, people often chase content ideas that look good… but don’t tell the truth. And that pressure to perform? It’s exhausting.

Authenticity gets lost… and that’s where the damage begins.

We were never meant to consume this much content… or comparison… in one day.

Too much social media isn’t just a distraction anymore. It’s becoming a mental health issue. It’s stealing our peace. It’s convincing people they’re falling behind.

It’s triggering social media obsession, negative self worth, and even hopelessness in people who are already hurting.

Is Social Media Toxic?

So what can we do?

First, we need to acknowledge the truth: social media affects mental health, and pretending it doesn’t only keeps us trapped.

Is social media toxic? It absolutely can be… especially if we’re not mindful of the reality behind the filters.

But here’s the good news: we have a choice. Do we need to stop social media altogether?

You don’t have to completely disappear from the internet (unless you want to).

But you can become intentional about how you use it.

And sometimes?

We just need to get off social media for a while… to clear our minds and reconnect with real life.

Pinterest?

One of the best decisions I made for my mental health was switching my focus to Pinterest.

Now hear me out… Pinterest isn’t like other platforms. It’s not built for vanity metrics or constant scrolling. It’s a search engine, not a social media feed.

That means you won’t find toxic arguments, negative comments, or fake lifestyles on every page.

On Pinterest, you’ll find:

  • Encouraging quotes
  • DIY projects
  • Helpful articles
  • Recipes, journaling prompts, and Bible verses
  • Beautiful imagery that actually inspires instead of making you feel “less than”

Pinterest doesn’t demand your attention the way other platforms do. It doesn’t push comparison the same way. And in my experience, it actually helps me feel better, not worse.

So no, not all platforms are equal when it comes to your peace of mind. But if you’re noticing anxiety, burnout, or sadness every time you scroll… that’s your cue. It might be time to unplug, even just for a bit.

So, Does Social Media Affect Mental Health?

Yes. But it doesn’t have to control you.

What You Can Do Now

You’re not powerless here. There are tools and resources that can help you reconnect with peace and protect your mind from the toxic side of social media.

Here are a few I personally recommend:

The Brilliant App
Start your day with biblical encouragement instead of comparison traps.

Faith and Action Bundle for Christian Entrepreneurs
A powerful collection of courses and tools to keep your heart and business aligned with God.

Experience Jesus. Really. (on Amazon)
A devotional resource that helps you meet Jesus in the mess of real life.

The Pause App (Free)
Created by John Eldredge, this app gently guides you to step away and breathe, offering quiet time with God in the middle of your day.

Grounding techniques
Take a walk barefoot in the grass. Yes, barefoot! This one may surprise you.
(I love this one so much I now use indoor grounding products, but I only trust this company)
Journal.
Listen to worship.
Do something that connects you back to now, not the noisy chaos online.

Let’s be honest… too much social media messes with our heads. It’s hard not to compare when you’re constantly bombarded with filtered highlight reels. This can drown out the still, small voice of God. We’re so busy watching everyone else’s lives that we forget to live our own.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, social media and mental health are deeply connected… and being aware of that is the first step toward using it in a healthier way.

You don’t have to fall into the trap of fake lives, filtered skin, or “perfect” Pinterest moms.
You don’t have to compare your behind the scenes to someone else’s curated content.

Instead, come back to truth. Reconnect with what matters. And if you’re going to be online… make sure it’s life-giving. Start with Pinterest. Or better yet… step outside, breathe deep, and remind yourself:

You are already enough. (With God, you ARE enough… we were never meant to be enough without Him)
You are not behind.
And you’re not alone.

Until next time…

All my love,

SusieQ
